Sedation
SEDATION
Why would you consider sedation? Sedation alleviates anxiety, helps you to be numb, reduces gag reflex, helps medically compromised patients, and allows facial muscles to relax so that the procedure is more comfortable. Sedation permits easier mouth opening for longer appointments.
TYPES OF SEDATION
We offer two types of sedation. They can be used separately or in combination. Your individual requirements will be discussed. If sedation is agreed upon, your vital signs will be monitored to ensure your safety during treatment.
Nitrous Oxide: This is commonly referred to as “laughing gas”. It is administered through a nasal mask that you breathe through your nose. It has a rapid onset (approx. 2-3 minutes) and since it is a gas, there are no affects after the gas is turned off at the end of the procedure. Patients are able to function normally without side affects, including driving after their endodontic procedure.
Oral Sedation: Oral sedation occurs when you are given a sedative-hypnotic drug prior to your endodontic appointment. You will not be unconscious for the treatment, but you should feel quite calm and comfortable. You will need a companion to drive you home after the appointment. Oral sedation may be discussed according to your specific needs.

ORAL CONSCIOUS SEDATION PROTOCOL
It has been suggested that you have oral medication prior to your endodontic appointment. This will help ease any anxiety you have regarding your treatment as well as allow your facial muscles to relax so the procedure is more comfortable.
You will not be unconscious for the treatment, but you should feel quite calm and comfortable.

WE ASK THAT YOU FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS:
-
Do not have any food or beverages two hours prior to your appointment.

-
It is advisable that you wear loose fitting clothing to this appointment.

Following your sedated appointment: (this does not apply to nitrous oxide):
-
You will be kept in the office until your recovery is sufficient to be discharged to the care of a responsible adult. Your driver must be in the office reception room to accompany you out of the office.
-
Do not drive or operate hazardous equipment or machinery for at least 18 hours following your appointment.
-
Do not consume alcoholic beverages or take other sedative medication for at least 18 hours or longer if drowsiness persists.
